The OAIC is the independent national regulator for privacy and freedom of information. It promotes and upholds privacy and information access rights.

Regulated community

Australian Government agencies and organisations with an annual turnover of more than $3 million, and some other organisations, must follow the Privacy Act 1988 (and other laws) when handling personal information. The Freedom of Information Act 1982 gives a right to access documents held by Australian Government agencies and ministers, unless an exemption applies.
